History of  CSWU

How the University was established

On 3rd September 1999, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland passes an Act establishing the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw . The act, unamended, is adopted on 22nd September 1999 by the Senate of The Republic of Poland, and signed by the President of the Republic of Poland on 30th September 1999. The wording of the Act is published in the Journal of Laws of 1st October 1999. The Act enters into force on 16th October 1999 (the 21st anniversary of John Paul II election to the Papacy) with the effective date of 1st October 1999. 

Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Poland and the Conference of the Episcopate of Poland

On 29th September 1999, in the Palace of the Archbishops of Warsaw, an agreement between the Government of the Republic of Poland and the Conference of the Episcopate of Poland on the legal status of the Church sciences faculties at the CSWU is signed in compliance with the Concordat requirements.

2006/2007 ACADEMIC YEAR

Death of Cardinal Adam Kozłowiecki

On 28 September 2007 Cardinal Adam Kozłowiecki dies at the age of 96 in Zambia, a many year well-known Polish missionary in Africa, Cardinal Presbyter of the Title San Andrea in Quirinali, a holder of an honorary doctorate from the CSWU in Warsaw.

Scientific conference: Digitalization and Electronic Media Market in Poland

The scientific conference co-organized by the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University and the Institute of Communication - the State Research Institute takes place in Warsaw on 27 September 2007.

On 27 September 2007 a ceremony of cementing in a corner stone on the construction site of a new building of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw takes place at the Młociny campus, 1/3 Wóycickiego Street.

Great Order of Poland Restored and an honorary doctorate from CSWU for Polish missionary Cardinal Adam Kozłowiecki

On 25 July 2007 Cardinal Adam Kozłowiecki is awarded Great Order of Poland Restored (Polonia Restituta) and an honorary doctorate from the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. The order is awarded to the Purpurate by Piotr Latawiec, a member of the CSWU Senate and director the the University's Main Library, whereas the honorary doctorate is awarded to him on behalf of the University's Rector and Senate by the delegation of Fr Professor Jarosław Różański and Fr Professor Józef Kulisz. The ceremony takes place at the Mpunde mission in Zambia.

Second CSWU Psychology Picnic

On 24-26 June 2007 takes place the Second Psychology Picnic organized by the CSWU Society of Psychology Students. Within the event there is also held a CSWU scientific picnic.

2nd ATK-CSWU Alumni Reunion

On 16 June 2007 the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw organizes the Second ATK-UKSW Alumni Reunion held at 5 Dewajtis Street.

7th  Lecture of  Bielańskie Open Lectures series

On 16 June 2007  the 7th open lecture on 'People hard of hearing and finger language' takes place in the series of the Bielańskie Open Lectures.

CSWU Professor Bohdan Cywiński appointed member of the Chapter of Polonia Restituta

On 14 June 2007 Professor Bohdan Cywiński of the CSWU Faculty of History and Social Sciences is appointed another member of the Chapter of Polonia Restituta by President of Poland, Lech Kaczyński. He is also awarded the Great Order of Poland Restored.

Scientific conference on 'The European Union Structural Funds for higher eductation schools and local governments in 2007-2013. How effectively you can get  financial means from structural funds'

On 6 June 2007 there is held a scientific conference on 'The European Union Structural Funds for higher education schools and local governments. How effectively you can get financial means from the structural funds' organized by the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University and the Leon Koźminski Academy of Entrepreneurship and Management.

CSWU Feast

On 28 May 2007 the CSWU Feast is celebrated and a ceremony of conferring the degree honoris causa on Bishop Prof. Antoni Stankiewicz is held.

CSWU Juvenalia

On 25 May the CSWU Juvenalia take place. There give their performance some Polish bands: RAZ DWA TRZY, Perfect, student bands, and a singer Stanisław Soyka.

14 May 2007 - the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University starts the next stage of a long awaited construction of the Centre of Education and Interdisciplinary Research.

10 May 2007 - the 6th Lecture of the series Bielańskie Open Lectures is delivered on 'What is sociology for?', 'Symbolism of four seasons of the year in modern art' , 'Can Poland become a federation?'.

9 May 2007 - All-Poland scientific conference on 'Problems of denominational education in Poland' is held. The conference has been organized by the CSWU Faculty of Canon Law and the Ministry of National Education.

Death of Archbp Prof. Kazimierz Majdański

29 April 2007 - Archbp Prof. Kazimierz Majdański dies at Łomianki near Warsaw. He was an initiator and its first director of the Insitute of Family Studies at the CSWU.

8 March 2007 - Vice-Premier Roman Giertych meets the students of the CSWU and delivers a conference on: 'Values and spiritual foundation of Europe - memories of the European meeting of ministers of education in Heidelberg'. The meeting was organized by the students of the Law and Political Thought Society.

9 January 2007 - the ceremony of conferring the title of Doctor Honoris Causa on Bp Gerhard Ludwik Muller, bishop of Ratisbon, takes place. The CSWU Senate has acknowledged his outstanding merits in shaping Christian culture and modern humanism of nowadays' Europe and his significant scientific and didactic achievements mainly expressed in matching the output of the Church tradition with modern theological trends in the sphere of dogmatic theology.

23 November 2006 - Ceremony of conferring Doctor Honoris Causa on Professor and Former President of Hungary,  Ferenc Madl. The CSWU Senate has acknowledged his merits in spreading moral virtues and Christian values in public life.

Scientific conference on Christianity and Culture

14-15 November 2006 - A scientific conference is held on Christianity and Culture. The conference has been organized under the auspices of the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Józef Glemp and the Minister of Culture and  National Heritage, Kazimierz Ujazdowski. It has started a thirteen years' series of conferences dedicated to Christian contribution to Polish culture organized by theological faculties.

11 November 2006 - abp Prof. dr hab. Kazimierz Majdański is decorated with the Order of the White Eagle in acknowledgement of his outstanding merits for the Republic of Poland, propagation  the values and importance of marriage and family in contemporary society.

26 October 2006 - a ceremony of cementing in a corner stone on the construction site of the Auditorium Maximum with the Centre of Education and Interdisciplinary Research and blessing of a renovated building for the Institute of Psychology at Wóycickiego Street 1/3 is held. The ceremony is celebrated by the CSWU Great Chancellor, Cardinal Józef Glemp with participation of other invited guests:  Auxiliary Bp Prof. Tadeusz Pikus, representatives of the government, members of Parliament and the Senate, members of the regional authorities, the University authorities and students, and representatives of the construction company 'Warbud S.A.'

Scientific conference on 50th Anniversary of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński's Coming Back to His Primate Pastoral Ministry

11 October 2006 - a scientific conference on the 50th Anniversary of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński's Coming Back to His Primate Pastoral Ministry is held. The conference starts with the Holy Mass celebrated by the Primate of Poland, Cardinal Józef Glemp. Next the CSWU Rector, Fr Professor Ryszard Rumianek officially opens the conference. The introduction is presented by Bp Professor Andrzej F. Dziuba, director of the Centre of Documentation and Studies on the Person and Teaching of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński. The following speeches are presented: Reaction from Warsaw to the Imprisonment of the Primate of Poland by  Professor Wiesław Jan Wysocki, dean of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences, The Church in Poland withouth the Primate of Poland in 1953-1956 by Professor Jan Żaryn (IPN), The Holy See and the West towards Imprisonment of the Primate of Poland by Michał Barcikowski MA from the IHPAN, Circumstances of Releasing Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński by Bartłomiej Noszczak (IPN).

On 10th October 2005, a ceremony inaugurating the seventh academic year is held at UCSW. Inaugural lecture is given by Professor Maria Miśkiewicz of the UCSW Faculty of Historical and Social Sciences.

Exhibition on a quarter of a century of Archpastoral Ministry of Cardinal Józef Glemp

On 18th March 2006, on the eve of his name day, Cardinal Józef Glemp participates in the opening of a large format photography exhibition by Ryszard Rzepecki on a quarter of a century of Archpastoral Ministry of His Eminence.

Scientific session commemorating the 25th anniversary of the death of the Primate of the Millennium

'The Church and Primate Stefan Wyszyński in the years 1956-1966' scientific session commemorating the 25th anniversary of the death of the Primate of the Millennium, is organized by the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński  University in Warsaw, The Institute of National Remembrance Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation, and the Independence Museum in Warsaw.

International scientific conference Cooperatores Veritatis Joseph Ratzinger / Benedict XVI

On 20th and 21st May 2006, an international scientific conference Cooperatores Veritatis Joseph Ratzinger / Benedict XVI is held at the assembly hall of Radom Theological Seminary and on 22nd May 2006 at UCSW in Warsaw, followed by its third part held in Rome in summer. The conference is organised by the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in Warsaw, the Faculty of Theology (UCSW Chair of Fundamental and Dogmatic Theology in Radom, and Bishop Zygmunt Zimowski, the Ordinary of Radom.

Agreement to construct the new building of UCSW Centre for Education and Interdisciplinary Research signed

On 23rd May 2006, the UCSW Rector Professor Father Ryszard Rumianek and the President of Warbud S.A. Mr Włodzimierz Włodarczyk sign an agreement to perform construction and erection work of the new Assembly Hall Building, a part of a UniversityCentre for Education and Interdisciplinary Research in Warsaw. The investment is co-funded by the University, the European Regional Development Fund and Ministry of Science and Higher Education in Warsaw.

Psychology Picnic

The Society of Psychology Students of the CSWU Institute of Psychology  organises the First Psychology Picnic which is held on 23rd and 24th June 2007 at the seat of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński  University   in the Warsaw district of Bielany. The event is held under the honorary patronage of Tomasz Koziński - the Mazovian viovode, Mirosław Kochalski - acting President of Warsaw, and Professor Father Ryszard Rumianek - Rector of the University.

2004/2005 ACADEMIC YEAR

Ceremony inaugurating the 2004/2005 academic year at UCSW

On 11th October 2004, the University celebrates the beginning of the sixth academic year. During the ceremony, The Primate of Poland is presented a book of remembrance on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of him being ordained bishop, and doctorate and habilitation diplomas are awarded. Moreover, Cardinal J. Glemp consecrates the new university building on the campus in Bielany, the so-called ‘walkway’ connecting the old University building with the new one.

Symposium on Father Jerzy Popiełuszko – his service to the Church and the Nation

On 24th November 2004, a symposium on Father Jerzy Popiełuszko – his service to the Church and the Nation commemorating the 20th anniversary of the martyr’s death of Father Jerzy Popiełuszko is organized by the Institutes of History and of Media Education and Journalism.

Occasional sitting the University Senate

On 7th April 2005, (on the eve of the papal funeral rites in Vatican) at an occasional sitting, the UCSW Senate adopts a resolution for the passing of the Polish Pope from this world for the Eternal Father.

Election of UCSW Rector

On 14th April 2005, at the special sitting, the UCSW Senate elects Professor Father Ryszard  Rumianek the University Rector for the term from 1st September 2005 to 31st August 2006

Election of UCSW Vice-Rectors

On 21st April 2005, following the motion of  the Rector-elect, the UCSW Senate appoints UCSW Vice-Rectors: Professor Father Henryk Skorowski, UCSW Professor Zbigniew Cieślak and UCSW Professor Tadeusz Klimski.

Jubilee session celebrating 50 years of UCSW Faculty of Theology

On 4th May 2005, a jubilee session celebrating 50 years of UCSW Faculty of Theology is held at UCSW.

On 15th October 2003, the intercollegiate symposium on The blessed Popes John XIII and John Paul II and the issue of peace (on the 40th anniversary of the Pacem in terris encyclical and the 25th anniversary of the pontificate of John Paul II) is held at UCSW.

Autumn Theological Meetings on The Church and the Universities in the teaching of John Paul II

On 4th - 6th November 2003, Autumn Theological Meetings are held at UCSW. On 4th November, a session on The Church and the Universities in the teaching of John Paul II is organized on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of John Paul II election as Pope and the 4th anniversary of establishing the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński 

Intercollegiate symposium of UCSW and CUL catechetics students

On 21st April 2004, an intercollegiate symposium of UCSW and CUL (Catholic University of Lublin) catechetics students takes place in Lublin.

Professor Father Jan Łach honoured

On 25th May 2004, Professor Father Jan Łach is presented a book of remembrance at a ceremony at UCSW. The meeting agenda covers as follows:

- the opening ceremony and acknowledgements of Professor’s Łach work for the Academy of Catholic Theology by Professor Father Roman Bartnicki – UCSW Rector

- a speech on The academic profile of Professor Father Jan Łach by Professor Father Stanisław Mędrala

- congratulations from the Council of the Faculty of Theology by Professor Father Stanisław Urbański – the Dean of the faculty of Theology

On 14th October 2002, a ceremony inaugurating the fourth year of academic, scientific and didactic work of UCSW takes place.

Professor Krzysztof Skubiszewski and Professor Andrzej Stelmachowski awarded UCSW Doctorate Honoris Causa diplomas

On 16th December 2002, **Professor Krzysztof Skubiszewski and Professor Andrzej Stelmachowski, two distinguished Polish lawyers, are presented the UCSW DoctorateHonoris Causa diplomas. Professor A. Stelmachowski’s dissertation was supervised by Professor Father Julian Kałowski, the Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law, and Professor K. Skubiszewski’s dissertation was supervised Professor Cezary Mik, the Dean of the Law Faculty.

On 15th January 2003, Rabbi David Rosen from Israel gives a lecture on INTER-DENOMINATIONAL RELATIONS IN THE HOLY LAND OF TODAY at the UCSW Institute of Christian-Jewish Dialogue.

Precious gift form the Church of Warsaw to the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in Warsaw

On 8th April 2003, at the residence of the Primate of Poland in Warsaw, by an authenticated deed of gift, Saint John the Baptist Metropolitan Theological Seminary in Warsaw conveys the plot covering 2,5 hectares at 3/5 Dewajtis Street in the district of Bielany, where the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński is situated, to the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński

FUCE meeting at UCSW

On 9th - 10th May 2003, a meeting of the European Federation of Catholic Universities (FUCE) organized by UCSW is held at the University – an important event within the cooperation with other universities. The University also welcomes the Rectors of the Universities present.

Festival of the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in Warsaw

On 28th May 2003, the next University festival takes place. The celebration is divided into three parts with the Holy Mass, the Rector’s Awards anddoctorate and habilitation ceremonies, and the promotion of The Hidden Glow - the volume of poetry by Karol Wojtyła published by UCSW.

Ceremony of conferring Doctor Honoris Causa on Cardinal Angelo Sodano

On 18th June ceremony of presenting the UCSW Doctorate Honoris Causa diploma to Cardinal Angelo Sodano - the Vatican Secretary of State, takes place.

The dissertation of the distinguished laureate was supervised by Professor Father Helmut Juros of the Faculty of Historical and Social Sciences.

The Cardinal gives a lecture on The Holy See in the international community.

Consecration of the corner stone of the new UCSW building

On 25th September 2003, a ceremony of consecration of the corner stone and cementing in the deed of erection takes place on the construction site of the new UCSW building in Bielany.

 

2001/2002 ACADEMIC YEAR

Ceremony inaugurating the third academic year and Doctorate Honoris Causa presented to the Primate of Poland

On 8th October 2001, the University celebrates a ceremony inaugurating the third academic year together with the ceremony of presenting the UCSW DoctorateHonoris Causa diploma to His Eminence Cardinal Józef Glemp - the Primate of Poland.

On 12th December 2001, the Faculty of Christian Philosophy (Chair of Pedagogy, Revalidation and Resocialisation of the Institute of Psychology) organises a symposium on Pedagogy yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

UCSW Honorary Doctorate for Pope John Paul II

On 15th December 2001, a ceremony of presenting a Doctorate Honoris Causa diploma of the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in Warsaw to Pope John Paul II takes place at the Clementine Room of the Apostolic Palace . UCSW is represented by the members of the Senate, faculty, teaching and administration staff, students, and the UCSW Choir.

President of Warsaw visits UCSW

On 1st March 2002, Wojciech Kozak, M.A., the President of Warsaw, pays a visit to the University.

Doctorate Honoris Causa for Professor Roland Hetzer

On 17th April 2002, Professor Roland Hetzer of the Free University of Berlin, one of the most prominent European cardiosurgeons, is awarded a UCSW DoctorateHonoris Causa.

Election of UCSW authorities for 2002/2005 term

On 18th April 2002, at a special meeting, the UCSW Senate elects Professor Father Roman Bartnicki the University Rector for the term from 1st September 2002 to 31st August 2005. NextUniversity Festival and Doctorate Honoris Causa for Cardinal Marian Jaworski

On 28th May 2002, the third University Festival is traditionally celebrated on the anniversary of the death of the University Patron and is joint with a presentation of a DoctorateHonoris Causa to Cardinal Marian Jaworski, the Latin rite metropolitan of Lvov.

 

2000/2001 ACADEMIC YEAR

2001 announced the year of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński at UCSW

On 28th September 2000, the UCSW Senate with the 24/2000 resolution announces 2001 the year of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński at the UCSW. The resolution precedes the resolution of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland announcing the 2001 the year of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński countrywide.

Ceremony inaugurating the second academic year (2000/2001) and doctorate and habilitation ceremonies

On Monday 16th October 2000, a second a ceremony inaugurating the 2000/2001 academic year takes place. A few days later, on 19th October 2000, doctorate and habilitation ceremonies are held at the John Paul II assembly hall.

John Paul II in Israel exhibition of photography

On 20th October 2000, an opening ceremony of a John Paul II in Israel. March 2000 exhibition by Dan Nataf - a renown photographer from Jerusalem, takes place in the new UCSW building. The ceremony is hosted by Yigal Antebi, Israeli Ambassador to Poland, and UCSW Rector Professor Father Roman Bartnicki.

Beginning of open lectures series

On 13th November 2000 a lecture by UCSW Rector Professor Father Roman Bartnicki on University in the contemporary world initiates a series of open lectures.

Visit by Cardinal M. Vlk

On 25th November 2000, Cardinal Miroslaw Vlk, the Archbishop of Prague and the Chairman of the Conference of the Episcopacies of Europe at the time, visits the University. Cardinal Vlk tours the UCSW campus in Bielany and during a visit to the UCSW Rector’s Office discusses the cooperation between Polish and Czech theological institutions.

University Christmas Eve meeting

On 20th December 2000, a Christmas Eve meeting with the faculty members, students, administration, library and maintenance staff is held at the University

Consecration of the Institute of Psychology building

On 12th January 2001, Cardinal Józef Glemp, the Primate of Poland and the Great Chancellor of the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in Warsaw consecrates the building in the district of Prague in Warsaw rented by the Institute of Psychology. The University authorities and the representatives of the local government take part in the ceremony.

Scientific conference on Unification of Europe

On 1st March 2001, a scientific conference on Unification of Europe – a challenge to Church takes place together with a promotion of a book under the same title.

On 29th - 30th May 2001, the Year of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński festivities are held at the UCSW.

Symposium on life and death

On 16th - 17th June

2001, a symposium under the honorary patronage of Professor Grzegorz Opala, the Minister of Health, on The border between life and death is held at UCSW.

On 4th November 1999, the first ceremony inaugurating an academic year at UCSW university is held.

Christmas Eve meeting with the Primate of Poland

On 31st January 2000, Cardinal Józef Glemp, the Primate of Poland and the Great Chancellor of the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in Warsaw, honouring years of tradition dating back to the days of Academy of Catholic Theology, welcomes the University Rector, University Senate, Professors, and the representatives of the Union of UCSW Students at the Palace of the Archbishops of Warsaw.

International Symposium celebrating the anniversary of the Institute of Family Studies

On 13 -14th May 2000, the International Scientific Symposium celebrating the 20th anniversary of the UCSW Family Studies Institute takes place.

The first University Festival and the first UCSW Doctorate Honoris Causa awarded

On 29th May 2000, the University celebrates its first Festival during which the first UCSW Doctorate Honoris Causa is awarded to Archbishop Józef Kowalczyk, the Apostolic Nuncio in Poland.

Scientific Symposium on Martyrs to the faith

On 29-30th May 2000, during the second part of the first University festivities, an all-Poland Scientific Symposium on Martyrs to the faith – the Church treasure in view of the 2000 Great Jubilee is held.

UCSW Rector made the honorary citizen of the Warsaw district of Bielany

To honour the 360th anniversary of the Warsaw district of Bielany a ceremonial session of the Council of the Warsaw district of Bielany is held.  The session includes awarding an honorary citizenship of the Warsaw district of Bielany to HE Professor Father Roman Bartnicki - the UCSW Rector, in recognition of his personal involvement in the transformation of the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw into the University of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński in Warsaw.
